Golf Guru GPS Reviews

Taking the guesswork out of golf!

Golf Guru 4Golf Guru 4   comes out tops in our TOP TEN REVIEW.

Many have asked why we have chosen the Golf Guru 4 over the beautiful Callaway uPro.  It wasn't an easy decision but we explain why here.

Since their introduction the Golf Guru range has been a  popular and top selling brand.  It's easy to see why when you compare the functionality of these well priced and extremely accurate models, backed by the best customer service in the business.

Talking of price - we have  an exclusive discount to  customers who  purchase any of the Guru models through this website.

Let's get the horrible stuff out of the way first.

  • The Golf Guru 4 is not the prettiest golf GPS around and it is not the smallest.
  • A smaller font could have been used so that all the options appear on the screen.  As it is you have to scroll to another page for some of the menu options.
  • It takes a bit of getting used to - doesn't all new technology?
  • You will probably lose the stylus which comes with the unit.  Not a major problem though.
  • Golf Guru 4 does not yet support MAC
The Good Stuff!  There is a lot that is good about the Golf Guru 4 touchscreen Golf GPS.
  • The first thing has to be the ongoing customer service.  When the Golf Guru was first launched they were inundated with pre launch sales.  People were disappointed with a lot of the software issues and there were plenty of unhappy customers who sent their units back.  Golf Guru listened and not only did they quickly sort the issues out but they rewarded their loyal clients with 50 Aervu course credits - see below for the difference between Standard and Aervu courses.
  • No annual or membership fees - we don't like them as technology is changing so fast it seems archaic to have annual fees.  most manufacturers are beginning to realize this and a good thing it is too.
  • Once you get use to the operating system the user interface is a pleasure to work with.  It took me two rounds to become familiar with the menu options.
  • Mapping is very easy and up to 30 targets per hole can be mapped.  This is more than any other Golf GPS on the market.  A really great feature is that you can map the shape of the green simply by walking around it.  Self mapping is a big criteria for golfers so this is an important feature.
  • The unit holds up to 200  courses - this is more than enough as access to the remainder of the over 20,000 courses is through the website and is very easy to do.
  • A high priority for us (and many golfers) is the ability to track and keep stats.  The Golf Guru 4 does this admirably and easily.
  • As of November 2009 all the standard maps have been converted to "Aervu Lite".  Sounds like a diet doesn't it?  What it means is that the standard maps have been greatly improved and have an element of the Aervu detail in them.  This has been supplied at no extra cost to Guru owners - typical of the customer service you will come to expect.
  • 100 Aervu Credit with initial purchase before 31st October 2009.  This is 50 Aervu courses and is another case of  under promise/over deliver from Golf Guru as a result of the initial software problems.
  • Initial software problems  indicated  a short battery life.  This was however only a software glitch and has since been resolved.  The battery life is about 14 hours and we have had 3 rounds of 18  holes out of a fully charged battery.  As with all  battery operated  gadgets the more you use the different features the more battery you will drain.  You may therefore find initially you will get  a bit less life out of your battery as you try all the different features.

More Functions:

Golf Guru Gray Scale The Original Golf Guru Gray Scale.

Price:        $249.95 (Before the discount)

The original Guru and the model that made Golf Guru's name.

When the Golf Guru4  was introduced the original Grey Scale was discontinued.  The uproar from the golfing fraternity was deafening and the folks at Guru were quick to reintroduce it.

As always Golf Guru  listened to the market.

The Bad.

Nothing!
Sorry we forgot - the original Golf Guru is also not yet MAC compliant.

The Good.

Dare we say everything?

  • Although the Guru  comes out  at number 5 on our overall  rating (see our top ten chart) it is only because it is competing with color models.  It is certainly our first choice when it comes to gray scale screens.
  • Scores and stats can be recorded
  • Up to 30 points per hole can be mapped.
  • The unit holds 40 golf courses while any of the other courses are available from the over 20,000 courses on the Guru website.
  • Standard courses can be requested and are usually mapped within a week.
  • See out "Top Ten" chart for some of the technical specs and comparison with other models.
